Compare two Shopify inventory exports
Export your inventory from Shopify twice, before and after a stocktake or on two dates, and load both files here. You get every SKU, variant and location with the quantity before, after and the change, shrinkage first, totals per location, the variants that are new or gone, and, if you add unit costs, the value of each change. Download it as CSV or print it. Free, no sign-up, and the files never leave your browser.
1. Export your inventory twice
- In the Shopify admin go to Products > Inventory > Export.
- Export from: All locations (or the one location you compare).
- Inventory states shown: All states, so the file has
On hand (current), the physical quantity. The "Available" export also loads, but available leaves out committed and unavailable units. - Export all variants as CSV. Keep the file with the date in its name, then export again later (after the count, at month end, after a delivery).
Rows are matched by product handle, variant options and location. Bins are added up per location, so moving stock from one bin to another is not a change. A variant in only one file is listed as new or gone and kept out of the shrinkage totals. Costs: the inventory export has no cost column, so paste a CSV with SKU and Cost per item (your products export from Products > Export has both).

Your files are read by this page in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is saved.
2. Read the report
- Shrinkage (negative changes on items in both files) comes first, the biggest loss in value at the top. Between two dates that includes sales: compare with your sales report for the same days before calling it loss.
- Right before and right after a stocktake, nothing else should move stock, so the change is your count's variance.
- Totals per location give units and value lost and gained, and how many variants were added or removed.
- Tick Show unchanged rows for the full list; the CSV always has every row.
What Shopify shows on its own
Shopify keeps an adjustment history per product or variant (the last 180 days, one variant at a time) and has inventory reports in Analytics, including an inventory adjustment changes report and a month-end inventory snapshot. None of them compares two exports you choose side by side, across all variants and locations, with the value of each difference. That is what this page does.
Count by phone instead: Countwell
Countwell is our Shopify app for stocktakes and cycle counts: it counts by phone with the camera in the Shopify mobile app (no POS Pro) and applies the difference to Shopify after a preview, with each difference valued at unit cost. It is in review and not listed in the App Store yet.
