How the schedule is worked out
- Items are split into classes by share of SKUs: A (the few items worth the most), B (the middle) and C (the long tail, everything left over).
- Each class is counted a set number of times a year. Common starting points are 12 for A (monthly), 4 for B (quarterly) and 1 or 2 for C. These are rules of thumb, not a standard: pick what your errors and your time allow.
- The year's counts for each class are spread evenly across 52 weeks, and the item numbers roll down your list so every item gets its turn before any item is counted again.
- The per-day column divides the week's counts by your working days, rounded up.
Sorting your items into A, B and C
Multiply each item's annual units sold by its unit cost, sort the list from the highest value to the lowest, and number it from 1. The top of the list is class A. The item numbers in the schedule refer to that numbering within each class.
Using the schedule
- Print the week's row, count only the items it names, and compare with the system quantity.
- Recount big differences before correcting the system, and note the cause (damage, mis-pick, receiving error).
- If the same items keep missing, move them up a class for a while.
