Year-end inventory valuation
At year end the stock you counted has to be turned into a money figure for the accounts. Paste one line per item (SKU, category, counted quantity, unit cost) and get the closing stock value by category and in total, a printable summary and a CSV. Free, no sign-up.
1. Paste your counted stock

How the value is worked out
Line value = counted quantity x unit cost. Closing stock value = the sum of all line values. The category rows are the same sum grouped by the category you typed. Use the same cost basis on every line.
Which unit cost? FIFO, average or latest
The tool multiplies by whatever unit cost you give it, so the method is decided before you paste. Commonly used methods, described generally:
- FIFO (first in, first out) assumes the oldest stock is sold first, so what is left is valued at the most recent purchase costs.
- Weighted average cost divides the total cost of stock available by the units available, and uses that one cost per item.
- Specific cost uses the actual cost of each identifiable item, which suits a small number of high-value pieces.
Which methods are allowed, and whether stock is valued at cost or at a lower net realisable value, depends on your country and your accounting rules. This page gives no tax or accounting advice: choose the method with your accountant and apply it the same way every year.
Before you hand the figure over
- Count at or as near to the year-end date as you can, and book in deliveries up to that date.
- Value damaged, expired or obsolete items separately from good stock, and ask your accountant how to treat them.
- Leave out stock you hold on consignment for others, and note stock you have sold but not yet handed over.
- Recount the largest line values first: one wrong cost or quantity there moves the total most.
- Check that every unit cost is per unit, not per case.
