Shopify inventory adjustment history: who changed what, and when
When a quantity looks wrong, the first question is who changed it. Shopify keeps an inventory adjustment history per item, and since May 2026 it records more than it used to. This page covers what is in it, where to look, and what to do when you need the record of a whole stocktake rather than one product.
What Shopify records now
Shopify's changelog entry of 7 May 2026 ("Inventory adjustment workflow now with full change tracking") says that every adjustment, in either mode, records the source, destination, who made the change, and when, and that you can view your full adjustment history at any time. The admin popover has two modes:
- Set to: enter the quantity; Shopify tracks the change.
- Adjust by: pick a source and a destination, for full movement tracking.
The same entry says the Bulk Editor is unchanged: it still sets available quantities directly, with no source or destination.
Where to find it
- Products > Inventory, and open the item (variant) you are checking.
- Open its adjustment history for the location in question.
- Read the rows: date, who or what made the change (staff member, an app, an order), the reason, and the quantity before and after.
Menu labels move around between admin updates; if you do not see these exact words, search the admin for "adjustment history".
What it does not give you
- It is read per item and location. To audit a month of changes you open items one by one.
- An approved Shopify stock count shows up as adjustments, but Shopify's help says stock counts themselves cannot be exported (see export a stock count to CSV).
- Sales, returns and transfers also write rows, so a stocktake's own changes are mixed in with normal traffic.
Keep a record of each stocktake
- Export inventory for the location right before the count and again after it is applied. The free inventory compare tool turns the two files into one change report, shrinkage first, valued at cost, in your browser.
- Name each file with the date and location and keep them together.
- Use adjustment history for questions about one item, and the files for questions about the whole count.
Countwell applies a finished count to Shopify as inventory adjustments with a reason, so the changes are visible in the same history, and every count has an Export CSV button (expected, counted, variance, value at cost). Countwell is not in the Shopify App Store yet.

Countwell is in testing and will be submitted to the Shopify App Store soon. Leave your email and we will write once, when you can install it. There will be a free plan (100 counted items a month); paid plans are expected at $9 and $19 a month, every plan with all locations.
