Stocky alternative for stocktakes

Stocky is gone: Shopify shut it down on 31 August 2026. If you used it to count stock, your year-end count still has to happen. There are four ways to do it now. Pick by what you already pay for and how many items you count. We make Countwell and a 12 USD Excel kit, both listed below next to the options that cost less or nothing.

1. Shopify's own Stock counts (free with your plan)

Since 20 October 2026 you can create and schedule a count in the Shopify admin, add products by search or barcode scan, assign it to staff, see who recorded each quantity, and review variances before stock changes (Shopify changelog, read 2 Nov 2026). Counting inside the POS app needs POS Pro and POS v11.16 or later (changelog, 28 Sep 2026). This replaces Stocky's count for many shops. Limits we have not been able to re-check this round (help.shopify.com blocks our server): export of finished counts, repeat schedules, and full-location counts that zero what was not found. Our notes from 1 November say Shopify's help page lacked them; unconfirmed since, so check it before you rely on them.

2. A stocktake app (about $7 to $40 a month)

Prices as each App Store listing showed them on 2 November 2026:

3. A free spreadsheet (0 USD)

Export your inventory from Shopify, print a blank count sheet, count, type the numbers in, and let a formula show the difference. Our free stocktake template gives you the blank count sheet (PDF) and a sample workbook with the variance formulas already in. It works for any shop size but you do the typing, and it does not write anything back to Shopify.

4. The Stocktake Kit (12 USD once, no subscription)

One Excel workbook that does what Stocky's stocktake did on paper and in a file: an import tab for your Shopify or Stocky CSV, blind count sheets, a variance report at cost, a recount queue, a shrink report and a 52-week cycle-count calendar. It does not connect to your shop and does not scan: you count on paper or a phone and type the result. One payment of 12 USD, 14-day refund. A subscription app costs more than that within two months, but an app saves the typing.
